Meaning Making
At Skytown, tape, scissors, paper, markers, and crayons are all freely available in the preschool classroom. Students can get them out and do (almost) whatever they want with these materials.
Today, there were some loose parts out for students, where the teachers anticipated free exploration around making binoculars or using toilet paper rolls to make machines. One can never predict exactly what will happen; but it is always something to look forward to.
One student got the orange tape, pulled it out, and bunched it into a ball. He was very proud of his "Tape Carrier."
And that's it. That's the meaning he made of the tape and how he used it today. It was awesome and creative, and very likely that not a single adult could have anticipated that being the purpose for which he used the tape today.
